Along with the equipment hierarchy, process objects are the second central concept for technological engineering in SIMATIC PCS neo.
Process objects comprise all main aspects of an automation object (e.g. function blocks, display icons, faceplates, alarm definitions, archive definitions) independent of their runtime environment (automation system, M&C stations/servers, etc.) and are typed. Process object types are grouped in libraries and can be managed centrally there.
This has the following advantages:
- Provision of tried-and-tested automation functions through libraries, such as the Advanced Process Library (APL)
- Central definition of automation and operation behavior on the process object type
- High-quality, uniform operating standards for the operator GUI
- Support of industry specifications through suitable process object types
- Possibility to clearly display and modify parameters for multiple objects of a type, both for the engineer (spreadsheet-based engineering) and for the operator (process object view)
- Reduced maintenance workload for the engineering solution because the system automatically manages the relationship between the different facets of a process object and it is therefore no longer necessary to keep cross-reference lists
