Software is a key driver for the digitalization of society and industry, and brings the real and virtual worlds closer together. Building technologies, energy infrastructures and products are first planned, developed and thoroughly tested virtually, before even a single screw is tightened in the real world. This is made possible through simulation using a digital twin, the virtual image of the real installation or product. Using these methods, products can be brought to market up to 50 percent faster – a major competitive advantage for companies.
Siemens recognized this trend at a very early stage: The success story began in 2007 with the acquisition of UGS, a company that specializes in product lifecycle management (PLM) software. The LMS company was subsequently added to the portfolio in 2012 with software for mechanical simulations. In 2016 Siemens furthermore acquired CD-adapco, a company specializing in software for numeric fluid dynamics and mentor graphics.
