Design
ENG_150603.XML
The modular ET 200M I/O device consists of:
- An interface module IM 153
- Up to 12 I/O modules of the S7-300 automation system and,
- If necessary, a power supply.
No slot rules apply to the I/O modules. They can be freely combined.
The ET 200M is connected via an interface module IM 153 to PROFIBUS DP. A connection to PROFIBUS DP using fiber-optic technology is possible via built-in interfaces on the IM 153-2 FO, the additional optical link module (OLM), or the optical bus terminal (OBT).
Various types of I/O may be introduced depending on the quantity structure of the master module.
The full address space of the ET 200M can only be used with a suitable master.
Design with bus connectors
The simple bus connector technology of the SIMATIC S7-300 makes the ET 200M flexible and easy to service:
- Module installation
Simply attach the module to the rail, swing into position, and screw tight.
- Integrated backplane bus
The backplane bus is integrated in the modules. The modules are connected via bus connectors which are plugged into the back of housing.
Design with active bus modules
The active bus modules allow hot-swapping:
- Time-saving module replacement
No downtime with module replacement because the system still operates with the remaining modules. The new module automatically becomes operational upon insertion. For S7-400 masters, swap operations for distributed modules and central modules are managed identically. A corresponding alarm is generated in the CPU. For all other DP standard masters, a message is submitted to the master via DP diagnostics. Hot-swap operations are not supported for S7-300 masters.
Various bus modules are available to design the ET 200M, and should be mounted on a special rail:
- Bus module BM PS/IM for receiving the power supply and IM 153
- Bus module BM IM 153/IM 153 for receiving two IM 153-2 (FO) for redundant operation
- Bus module BM 2x40 for receiving 2 I/O modules of 40 mm width
- Bus module BM 1 x 80 for receiving 1 I/O module of 80 mm width
An Ex-partition is available as an accessory to achieve the required thread length. This can be inserted between each bus module.
- Easy installation
The bus modules are hooked into the rail, pushed together, and secured by lateral connectors. The modules can then be hooked into position and screwed tight until the connector touches the bus module. Connectors for unused slots must be protected by backplane bus covers. A bus module cover is inserted on the side of the last bus module.
Power supply
Special versions of the ET 200M are available with single-phase power supplies of 2 A, 5 A, and 10 A.
Function

Principle of operation
The inputs and outputs of the modular ET 200M I/O station can be accessed from the user program in the PLC in the same manner as the inputs and outputs of the central controller.
Communication through the bus system is handled completely by the master interface module in the central controller and the IM 153 interface module.
Proper operation of the ET 200M is verified by way of diagnostic functions.
The ET 200M diagnoses:
- Module faults
- Short circuits (outputs)
- Bus errors, i.e. faulty data transfer
- 24 V DC load voltage supply
- Plugging and removal of I/O modules
The diagnostic data are analyzed as follows:
- Remotely through diagnostic LEDs on the ET 200M
- Centrally via the CPU in the programmable controller.

15 bytes + 5 bytes per S7-300 I/O module

10 bytes + 20 bytes per parameterizable S7-300 I/O module

Calculating the frame length required for the configuration and parameter assignment frame
The DP master must provide the required quantity of configuration and parameterization data. A few masters have a restricted configuration and parameterization frame length. On the S5-95U/DP, for example, the maximum length of the configuration and parameterization frame is 32 byte. This means that in this example up to 3 modules, one of which may be parameterizable, can be plugged into the ET 200M.
When the station is connected to master modules which are not parameterized with COM PROFIBUS or STEP 7 (operation on third-party master modules), a fixed preassigned GSD file can be created with COM PROFIBUS from Version 3. This file is then loaded into the configuration tool of the third-party manufacturer and can be used for simple parameter assignment of the station.
This allows the use of the user-friendly plain-text parameterization feature of COM PROFIBUS; there is no need for hexadecimal code inputs in the third-party configuring tool.
To be able to use the entire address area of the IM 153, a suitable master is required.
