Industrial Edge Management (central Edge devices and application software management)

Industrial Edge Management is the central infrastructure with which all connected Edge devices and their software can efficiently be operated and managed over the complete life cycle within a factory or worldwide.

Instead of having to run software updates and security patches on each device individually, you control everything centrally from one system, which can be installed on-premises, within the IT infrastructure or in private/public cloud solutions as required.

The system is offered as:

• Installation for PCs and IT cloud infrastructures via an ISO image
• Software as a service solution based on Siemens MindSphere (planned)

Moreover, Industrial Edge Management offers access to innumerable Edge applications of customers, partners and Siemens in the context of the open ecosystem.

Unified Comfort Panel with integrated Edge device management

In addition to central management of all connected Edge devices, the SIMATIC HMI Unified Comfort Panel offers the possibility to run the Edge applications and to manage, start and stop Edge applications directly on the HMI.

Licenses

Industrial Edge Hub Access:

To obtain access to the Industrial Edge Management software, you first need access to the Industrial Edge Hub, which is available globally.
This is done using the Industrial Edge Hub Access license. The Industrial Edge Hub contains all the information you need to commission an Industrial Edge solution such as documentation, software (Edge Management system, Edge App Publisher) for download.
The scope of supply includes the option of connecting and managing one (1) Edge device per Industrial Edge Management system free of charge.

Industrial Edge Management license:

An annual fee is charged for each additional Industrial Edge device that is connected with the central Edge management for the central update, firmware updates, security patches and continuous further development of the system.

Each connected device requires one (1) Industrial Edge Management license.

The previously customary one-off fee for software does not apply at all to the Industrial Edge Management. Licensing is implemented for a period of one year based on the number of connected Edge devices (software update contract).

• Maintenance and update work during operation, which previously had to be performed manually, e.g. using a USB flash drive on devices or remote desktop connections, is reduced due to the central software management.
• In addition, the commissioning workload (installing the operating system, security hardening, manual installation of application software, user management) for PC-based systems is reduced thanks to the ready-to-use Edge Runtime, on which any Industrial Edge applications can be installed.
• Industrial Edge allows the industrial application and use of Edge Computing on hundreds of machines and devices, also distributed globally. 
• Security patches are provided by Siemens and can be rolled out to all devices in a centralized manner.
• The devices and applications can be adapted to new requirements at any time. Apps can be distributed to connected Edge devices with one click, meaning that the infrastructure grows with the customer's changes.
