Connectivity engineering enables the connection of external components and systems to SIMATIC PCS neo with uniform engineering in a shared hardware or equipment hierarchy. In this case, automation objects are represented by connectivity process objects. Because the automation programs of external components and systems are not created via SIMATIC PCS neo engineering, the connectivity process objects contain a communication facet in place of function blocks. Connectivity process objects are grouped together with process objects in libraries and are handled in a uniform manner with the same advantages as an object-oriented procedure. In connectivity engineering, protocol-specific settings have been separated. A new view, called "Connectivity", has been added; it is positioned between device hierarchy and equipment hierarchy. For details, see under "Connectivity layer".
